How to Transfer mp3 music, ringtones, photos etc to a Sony Ericsson phone from a computer.

No PC Suite. No Media Manager. No PC Tool(s). And No other software or utilities. Nothing.
You don't even need to have any All-In-One or X-In-Y memory card reader! Just a Windows PC with a USB port and USB support.

Disclaimer: You legal experts and smarties out there, this is basic stuff for innocent people to enjoy. Please, try your eagle eyes and owly ears elsewhere with rich pickings!

Now, let's get on with the important issue of transferring stuff to your Sony Ericsson or similar phones from a PC.

Introduction
The Sony Ericsson CD software (eg PC Suite 3.205.00) that's included with new SE phones such as W890i, C905 Cybershot and similar phones is 'not designed to work with' Windows 2000.
Unfortunately, you will only find out this info after you bought your phone and read the 'ReadMe' file on the software CD!
As a result, this instruction was specifically written for SE W890i, C905 Cybershot etc owners with a Windows 2000 PC.
In addition, if you don't want to install the Sony Ericsson software, this instruction can be used for other SE models including newer phones such as Sony Ericsson C905 etc.

Warning: Deviating from this instruction in any way may ruin your memory card, damage your computer or even render your phone useless!

Having said that, the following method worked for me perfectly - and it always works nicely every time I come across a Windows 2000 PC.
So, if it works for you, too, then Good Luck. But if it does not, please, don't sue or blame me.
Alternatively, you can ignore my instructions altogether.

Please, carefully, follow this easy tutor and stick to it as per step throughout.
Step 1
Make sure your PC is on and running normally. If necessary, close any running or open applications that might restart or shutdown your computer while you're transferring stuff.

Step 2
If not already inserted into the phone, load your mobile phone with the Memory Stick Micro (M2) card included or bought optionally. How to do this, please, consult your phone manual.

Next, switch your phone off.
----------
If required, turn on phone (Normal mode) to check how much RAM space available on your memory card.
Go to main Menu --> Settings --> Phone status.
Look at 2nd and 3rd lines from bottom of screen.
" Momery card:
1907 MB free
".
Now, check how much stuff to transfer and make your decisions.
Finally, leave your phone off.
)
----------

Step 3
Find the USB data cable included in your phone kit.
Insert one end (small, USB) into your PC's USB port and the other end (big, SE Fastport connector) into your phone's socket.

Sony Ericsson logo/startup screen should briefly come on followed by Windows detecting Mass Storage device, Sony Ericsson ... etc and then a flashing SE data cable that connects (animation) a laptop PC to a phone with a warning message "Do not remove the USB cable untill you have exited the application on your PC". If necessary, 'Select' Info to read it more.

----------
If, however, you forgot to turn your phone off in Step 2 above and you left it on before plugging into the PC, don't panic! Windows 2000 will still detect it or phone will switch itself off then it will briefly come on to display some options, messages, warnings etc.
In this case, your phone displays "USB Modes" menu.
Highlight the last option "Mass Storage" then press 'Select'.

You should see the following warning message "You can not use phone functions during the mass storage session".
'Continue?'
Choose 'Yes'.

Next, phone displays "Preparing for mass storage"... then "Sony Ericsson" logo/startup screen briefly comes on followed by a flashing SE data cable that connects (animation) a laptop PC to a phone with a warning message "Do not remove the USB cable untill you have exited the application on your PC").

Now, wait untill phone goes to sleep (blank screen = off).
----------

In either case (phone off or phone on), you will find your phone/memory card.
Therefore, do NOT fiddle with anything, electricity or try to switch things on/off. Take it easy and observe things instead.

Things are hotting up now. So, please, be a little bit patient.

Step 4
Double click on My Computer icon on desktop.
----------
If you receive Insert disk error message such as please insert a disk into drive L:. or similar then try the following (one at a time):
i) Make sure phone goes to sleep by itself with a blank screen. But do not press any phone buttons, switch phone off etc. Let it do it by itself!
Now, go back to Step 4 above. Still having problems? Move to step ii) below.
ii) Check data cable is fully inserted into phone and PC. In particular, slightly, pull back (out) cable from USB port then push it back into USB port all the way in. Still getting error(s)? Move to step iii) below.
iii) Disconnect your phone safely (see Step 5 below for more info) then reconnect it and restart procedure from Step 4 above.

----------

In the end, you should find two entries to your list of disk drives such as:
(K:) Removable disk
(L:) Removable disk
The first letter (K in this case) is your phone/built-in memory and the second drive letter (L) is your included or optionally bought memory card.
Note: Don't move anything just yet! Instead have a brief, sneak preview in your phone/memory card.
While you are there, recheck/confirm total free space on memory card against total size of file(s) to transfer.

For some obvious reasons (safety, bigger capacity, value etc) we are only interested in the memory card - not the phone itself/its built-in memory or its contents.
(Later on you can easily copy stuff from memory card to phone and vice versa. Well, you can now access your phone/its built-in memory, too. But you have to be careful and specific about doing things if you choose to do so. That's all).

Now, open (double click or select then choose Open) the memory card. If necessary create new folders on the memory card for stuff to be transferred etc.
Next, transfer stuff, music, ringtones, mp3 files, photos, video clips etc from PC to your phone by highlighting then dragging and dropping selected files. It is as simple as that. Copy and past operation.
But do not unplug your phone in a hurry yet!

Step 5:
Disconnecting your phone safely from PC.
When finally finished, you have to properly disconnect your mobile phone from PC safely.
First, close all open files and folders including Windows Explorer.
Next, right click on the mass storage symbol on PC Taskbar (RH corner, near computer clock etc) then choose 'Eject or Unplug device'.

This action brings up the 'Hardware Device Window'.
Highlight the most top (root) option 'USB Mass Storage Device' and then select 'Stop'.

Another windows pops up 'Safe to remove hardware' with the info message (i) 'The USB Mass Storage Device' device can now be safely removed from the system.
Press 'OK' then 'Close' to close window.
Finally, carefully, unplug your phone from PC.
That's all.

Conclusion
This quick step-by-step instruction was carried out with Sony Ericsson W890i and Sony Ericsson C905 Cybershot on Windows 2000.
But it can be applied to other Sony Ericsson handsets and similar music/multimedia models from other phone manufacturers with a USB data cable, as well as, to other MS Windows OSes with a USB port/USB support.
But I have not explored it all. Try it on your own risk!
(To be honest, there's very little to go wrong, if any, if you use common sense and/or follow above instructions properly).
Alternatively, stay safe and stick to your phone manufacturer's official route - which is not an option for someone reading this guide thus far! loool.

NB: Some older OSes eg Win9x came with an earlier version of USB1/USB1.0/USB1.1 but with no or little USB support. Hence, their USB ports lack functionality and will not work with above instruction.

Finally, you can print out above instructions for a reference or ease of use.

I hope this procedure helps someone out there.
